Robocop (Paul Verhoeven, 1987)
Write a 5 page essay in which you “develop” the film assigned to your group above. This should consist of your efforts to determine and then consider what the film is thinking about. What does it seem to think about the world and us in it? In that thinking, do you find it to be insightful, misguided, interesting, partial, etc.? Could you add to or extend its thought in some way?
In this undertaking, please attend to the elements of film thinking (image, color, sound, focus, perspective, speed, transitions, etc) that were introduced in class and the “Elements of Film Thinking” handout (available on Blackboard), as well as to what the characters do and say in the film. That is, attend not only to what events and characters the film presents, but to how it presents them as well. The film you have been assigned is likely to be the subject of some insightful discussion already, and a research trip to the library (or an hour or two on the various library databases available online) would be highly recommended. Please make use of this but do not rely on the work of others to the extent that your own efforts are too substantially reduced, however.
